Anaerobic Bacteriology Research Laboratory

History

The Anaerobic Bacteriology Research Laboratory (LIBA acronym in Spanish) has focused its efforts for more than 20 years on the isolation, identification and characterization of human and veterinary pathogens unable to proliferate in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. More recently, we combine techniques of protein biochemistry, omics and experiments in cell cultures and animal models to understand the mechanisms by which Clostridium difficile causes disease, acquires resistance genes and diversifies in hospitals in the country. We also apply comparative genomics to strains of Porphyromonas sp. of different animal hosts in order to identify their adaptation mechanisms and we have an emerging line of applied science for the development of better detection and disinfection systems of C. difficile.
