About research

Katherine Hidalgo Rodríguez is a researcher/teacher at Clinical Analysis Department of the Faculty of Microbiology and the Center for Research on Tropical Diseases of the University of Costa Rica. As part of your academic training, she completed a degree in Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry and currently, she is a student of the Academic Master Program in Microbiology, Parasitology, Clinical Chemistry, and Immunology, both at the University of Costa Rica.

As a teacher, she participates in the theory and laboratory courses of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology, for students of the Degree in Microbiology and in the course of Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry for students of the Diploma in Laboratory Assistant. Also, she collaborates in the social action project "Laboratory Services, Consulting and Quality Control in Clinical Analysis".

Currently, the research she is developing with her research group is focused on the study of possible candidate genes under gene dosage compensation induced by sublethal doses of genotoxic chemotherapy. For this purpose, they developed a model that induces genomic instability through different sublethal doses of genotoxic chemotherapy administration; that allows the cancer cell proliferation and also induces chances in the DNA content and cell karyotype. From this model, it is possible to select genomic instability conditions that allow the study of RNA and DNA (copy number variation) expression changes, induced by the genotoxic chemotherapy. With the aim of identify candidate genes under gene dosage compensation, which could have a fundamental role in cancer evolution and chemotherapy resistance.
