About research

My research is focused in the field of bacterial pathogenesis. In particular, we study the virulence mechanisms used by pathogens with diametrically opposed strategies. On the one hand, we analyze the cellular and molecular determinants that allow the bacterium Brucella abortus to find its intracellular niche in the endoplasmic reticulum and allow it to replicate in it. In this line we have been able to determine the fundamental role played by a two-component system in sensing the transition of the extracellular environment to the interior of the eukaryotic cell in order to initiate the mechanisms necessary to survive intracellularly. Additionally, we have addressed epidemiological, immunological and prophylactic aspects with respect to bovine and human brucellosis. On the other hand, we study the nosocomial pathogen Clostridium difficile. This bacterium induces a diarrhea associated with the use of antibiotics mainly in geriatric population hospitalized thanks to the production of two toxins. We have studied the mechanisms of intoxication that induce these toxins, emphasizing the differential effects produced by toxins from different strains of this bacterial species. Additionally, we study factors independent of the toxins that contribute to the pathogenic process induced by this bacterium.
